NBC News’ Hit Piece and Characterization of Gamers as Alt-Right

I just love how video games are always the target of the media.  It really is kind of impressive the level of consistency they have in caricaturing gamers as one bad thing or another.  No matter what the big social issue is of any given age, you can be somebody somewhere has decided to make it about video games.  After all, gamers are a very easy to mock lot.  We have a very insular hobby that doesn’t typically preclude socialization.  It’s easy to see people out getting drunk and partying and going “yeah!  They’re really living it up!” and then looking at this other group and going “why aren’t you out doing fun stuff like this?”  Never mind that gaming has become a multi-billion dollar industry that rivals Hollywood.  Granted, a lot of that is built on unsustainable business practices, but let’s not dive too deep into nerd culture.  We’re talking about reactionary idiot culture, after all.

Jack Thompson wanted to make it that video games encourage violence.  Something that was proven demonstrably false.  There has never been any evidence, anywhere, the video games cause violent behavior, or affect how a person acts in real life on any significant way.  Anita Sarkeesian decided to take a crack at saying that video games cause sexism.  Even though it has also been disproven that that is the case.  Before a study from Germany came out that actually did the hard leg work, an easy refutation of her arguments was – if video games cannot cause a person to be violent, how can they cause a person to be sexist?  If one predominately negative behavior has NEVER been demonstrated to exist with gamers, then how does the other one?  Good point.

NBC News decided to take a crack at saying video games are being subtly used to help destroy the good society of regressive-left values.  After all, it’s been shown that the regressive left is all over NBC’s big sister, MSNBC.  Why wouldn’t it filter down into them?  In a new video, they decided to try and make the argument out to be that gaming is secretly helping motivate the alt-right, and how GamerGate was all part of it.  During the video I will share, my biggest wonder was – why did Anita Sarkeesian not give these people an interview?  They certainly are taking cues from her.  Let’s take a look at the video and talk about it.

Even the title of this video is patronizing.  Gamers are facilitating the rise of the alt-right?  Give me a fucking break.  What evidence is there of that contention?  Fuck it, let’s talk about the video.  It opens by saying that Discord is the latest sign of a secret cabal between gamers and the alt-right.  They’re gonna connect the dots for us!  Okay, video, let’s hear it.

Gaming culture has always been racist and sexist?  Wow, that is insulting.  What evidence is there of this?  The fact that gaming is done by people all over the world, of all ethnic groups?  That women and men are able to enjoy the hobby?  Casual gaming is predominately women, with chicks on their phones with phone games.  And the core gaming audience only cares about one thing – skill in the game.  If you are the kind of person who plays online games, which I know is where this video is going.  But what about people like me?  I game for story.  I’m not a racist and sexist.  I’m a misanthrope,  I hate my entire species.  Racism is just more work when I can hate everyone just as well.

Who brought up this little tidbit, anyway?  Emma Vossen, PhD candidate?  Why the fuck do I care what some PhD candidate thinks?  How about getting me a vetted expert in the field with years of research that they can show to demonstrate their knowledge and prove their contentions?  The video tells us that she’s showing how sexism in gaming is being shown in the real world.  This better be good.  Otherwise it will look like they are mining for whatever idiot they can find to prove that they are right.  I’m sure that’s not the case, right…?

The “evidence” for her contention is her “study” that the video says is about how #GamerGate was about harassing women in games journalism.  Um…no, it wasn’t.  At any point.  Let’s ignore all the bullshit lies about what the movement was about.  When all this started with the Zoe Post, it was about Zoe Quinn.  She has never been a games journalist.  When the movement forgot about her because it was more interested in the people who she was fucking and how unethical those people looked, it was five men that were the targets.  Not a single woman.  Then came the torrent of “Gamers are Dead” articles that really kicked things into high gear, along with the censorship of the topics of what at the time was the Quinnspiracy.  Then it became #GamerGate and it was centered around the fact that games journalism was corrupt and that SJW influence had taken complete control over it.  A contention that was completely vindicated in the leaks of the Crash Override Network chat logs.  All of this is easy to verify.  The Internet Aristocrat videos that really blew the situation up are all mirrored on YouTube and easy to find.  The Factual Feminist’s response video to the whole affair is easy to find too.  Disproving this narrative is so fucking simple that it blows my mind, and I’m kind of shocked NBC didn’t see it.  Maybe that’s why this video has a paltry 200+ likes and 20,000+ dislikes.  Makes ya think.

So, GamerGate secured the “alt-right movement.”  Did these idiots not know the first thing about actual research?  This is almost as bad as Hipster McGee on PBS’ short-lived gaming channel.  GamerGate has all kinds of personalities involved with it.  There were people from all different walks of life who were virtually guaranteed to hate each other coming together under one banner – that games journalism is corrupt and pushing a social justice narrative.  What evidence does this “PhD candidate” have?  Oh, right, they show Tweets that are very unpleasant.  Well, that sure does cement that point.  If anything, all of this just shows how pathetic the world of academia’s standards have become when I can Google search and destroy Vossen’s entire premise in under five minutes.  Bravo.

And somehow all of this came to prominence during the 2016 election cycle.  Are you kidding me?!  By 2016, GamerGate was pretty much dead.  You’d see the tag every now and again, but it was pretty much gone.  The idea that this movement that had NOTHING to do with the Presidential election or any kind of politics outside of the gaming sphere was somehow connected to Donald Trump is laughable at best and downright fabrication of facts to support a narrative at worst.  Oh, it influenced the “tactics” of Trump supporters.  What tactics?  Details, woman.  Her argument is that minorities are “fighting for equality” and white men are saying they are oppressed.  To borrow a phrase…

One of these things is not like the other.  One of these things just DOESN’T BELONG!

We then get some quote without knowing if this was from a voice chat during gaming or just some racist asshole being asked a question in an interview.  Yeah, the guy is a racist asshole, but without knowing where this was recorded from, how does this asshole saying shit correlate to gaming culture?  They have an actual quote where a sexist asshole says something rude.  Okay.

Our “PhD candidate” has to clarify that not all gamers are sexist and racist (fucking duh), but the culture overall is sexist and racist.  And they say this while showing a clip from a video game where you play as a killer trying to kill stereotypical slasher characters who happen to be female.  Wow.  That’s so subtle I think it could be taught at a university.  You know, if it isn’t being so already.  I would just love if they showed that with a clip from a game like ABZU or Persona 5 and see how that stacks up.  Wait, that wouldn’t go with the narrative being pushed.  Can’t have that.

Then we get some new guy saying that Discord is the real culprit and the video makes the argument that it went from gamers being online to idiots with tiki torches in the real world.  Not even if we bought into this stupid premise would that make any fucking sense.  They’ve made blanket statements about gamers and how gaming culture is sexist and racist without any verifiable evidence to back it up, and are now making the argument that this somehow led to people on Discord being racist and sexist and becoming alt-right Neo-Nazis.

And that’s all I got on this video.  NBC News, supposedly more straight news than their big sister company, put this on their official YouTube page and expect people to take it seriously.  Thankfully, the Internet didn’t bite.  This video is massively down-voted.  Not even the social justice retards who are all in favor of this crap can support it.  It’s bad argumentation.  It’s slipper slope fallacy.  It’s guilt by association fallacy.  It’s correlation equaling causation fallacy.  It’s stupid.  I’m done.

Lucien’s Unpopular Opinion: Trendy Trans People

I did a post recently responding to a 17 year old shit-stain named Milo Stewart and her video where she makes a statement that all cis people are transphobic, all men are misogynistic, and all white people are racist.  She goes out of her way to say that these statements are not insulting (yes they are) and that they aren’t generalizations (yes they fucking are!) and how I found that more than a little insulting.  Milo then goes on to list all the horrifically-terrible qualities about herself that make her a genuinely terrible person.  But that wasn’t the thing that annoyed me most.  The thing that annoyed me is this idea that some 17 year old punk has the balls to make some kind of declarative statements about humanity when this little puke-spot hasn’t done shit.  She hasn’t gone out into the world and done shit.  All of her ideological positions come from the Internet.  She’s a parrot to the things that she hears online.  Oh, and she gets her viewpoints from a black woman who says that black people are unambitious losers and the most effeminate black nationalist I have ever seen.

But when I did a little digging into Milo and what she actually believes, some things became abundantly clear.  For example, while she identifies as trans, she has stated that she has no intentions of pursuing anything in the realm of sexual transition.  Okay, that could just be a personal choice.  I dated a girl whose gender identity was rather fluid, but that was tied in to some biological problems she had associated with a shit-kicking list of problems she had at birth that had her in medical hell for years growing up.  I get why she would have some issues.  Milo, on the other hand, is far more typical than she wants to believe.

She has openly stated that she does not like anything masculine.  At all.  Yet she demands that she go by male pronouns.  I refuse to, but that’s because I don’t respect this little prick enough to give her the respect for that designation.  The girl is obsessed with gay men, which isn’t that surprising.  If you look at the prevalence of yaoi art among girls her age, her obsession with gay men is actually pretty normal.  She’s a “non-binary, trans, asexual, aromantic q*eer who doesn’t care about your cisgendered feelings.”  Did you catch that laundry list of stuff?  Yet she is obsessed with gay men.  Something is a little off.  I’m getting this sneaking suspicion, and when I look at sites like Tumblr, it is becoming more and more clear to me that what I am seeing in her isn’t an isolated incident.

Milo Stewart is part of a group of people that I like to call “trans because it’s trendy.”  Just like these otherkin people with their headmates, conditions, and autism.  It’s cool to be these things.  You want to be all the stuff.  Because after all, if you are this laundry list of stuff, then you aren’t some lonely, typical teenager.  You’re special!  You’re unique!  Just like all the other people who you got to meet and hear all about their unique things on Tumblr!  That’s amazing!

Let me make something very clear – I am NOT saying that this is all trans people.  I am fully supportive of people who have put a ton of thought into this and are working to transition or find out their gender identity.  But those people aren’t the kind of people that I find on these websites.  My ex was as “gender-fluid” as it comes, and I guarantee that she would want to bitch-slap the likes of Milo Stewart for being the stuck-up narcissist that she is.  The reality is that people like Milo are giving the trans community a bad name.  Because to them, these sentiments are just a tagline.  They’re just a Tumblr “About” blurb.  They are a way to make themselves look special.

Internet Aristocrat made a great series of video about these kinds of people.  Go on YouTube and type in “Internet Aristocrat Tumblrisms.”  The stuff you’ll see will blow your mind.  And the problem is that we have these people, these “trans because it’s trendy” people who are doing real harm to a community who is probably just looking to be left alone and allowed to live their own lives, without having these people holding them up like a prop.  Just like the otherkin and headmates communities are doing harm to people who are schizo and need mental help by telling them that they are that way too.

One of the reasons that I say this is because, if you go through Milo’s old videos, it becomes abundantly clear that the person that she’s really trying to convince about how she feels is herself.  Not us. This girl is so desperate to believe what she says, and it’s kind of sad because you realize that the reason there is this self-loathing within her is because of this cognitive dissonance.  It’s okay to be androgynous, Milo.  It’s okay to be quirky.  It doesn’t have to be some crazy thing.  It can just be you doing you.  But that’s not what you want to hear.

I know this opinion will not be met with a lot of love.  I understand.  I don’t mod comments.  If you want to come in and bitch me out, you’re free to do so.  But I have seen through the veil on this issue, and it’s time that we called people like Milo Stewart out for what she is – a stupid, ignorant little Tumblrite who has to make sure we all know how special she is.  Kid, you’re 17 years old.  It’s time for you to grow up.  I know, it’s hard.  Groj knows, Tumblr is doing everything in its power to make sure that people can crawl into a little nostalgia bubble and live there forever.  But your ignorance about the way the world works is more than a little insulting.

For more information, here’s a link to a video where someone far less nice than I decided to go after her.  It’s a good watch.

You Are the Saddest Beta I Have Ever Seen (A response to Jamin Warren)

I want to introduce you all to a group of people.  These people are sad, lonely, pathetic individuals who make you so ashamed to share the same gender with them.  They are people who DESPERATELY try and suck up to a group of people, hoping to get them to notice that they exist, and maybe, just maybe, see what female sex parts look like.  Among their number are the likes of Ryan Wiley, Bob Chipman, No-Willy Wheaton, and the pretty much the entire writing staff at Kotaku that has a penis.  Another person that we can add to the list is the host of PBS Gameshow, Jamin Warren.  But, that name seems like too misleading.  I am going to take a cue from Jimmy Vega and give him a new one.  Let’s call him Hipster McGee.  Oh, right, we already called him that.  Well, let’s just keep that between us, eh?

Back to the point, the group of people that I am going to be introducing you to is the Beta Male.  Urban Dictionary defines Beta Males as –

An unremarkable, careful man who avoids risk and confrontation. Beta males lack the physical presence, charisma and confidence of the Alpha male.

I couldn’t have put it better myself.  Beta males are the most pathetic group of people.  Sadly, these types are becoming more and more common in the world today.  Why?  Well, that’s a question for smarter people than I.  From where I’m sitting, it’s because we now live in a world that tells men that their masculinity is bad and that they need to be more feminine.  To be clear, I have nothing against guys who are in touch with their feminine side.  I am.  But there is a fine line between being open to things like herbal rub for the chicken you are cooking, and making the kinds of video that Ryan Wiley makes.

Something to know about beta males is that they are complete ass-kissers.  The moment that they find a group that they can latch onto, they will do so.  Any group where they feel that they can be noticed and validated.  Also, any group where they think that there are women who will notice them.  That’s the other thing about beta males – they are straight.  The whole bunch of them.  Before you come at me, there is a difference between flaming queens and beta males.  Queens generally have some amount of charisma, to a certain demographic.  Betas have none.  Beta males will get with any group where they believe that there are women-folk who will notice that they have a penis, and think that they are worth letting them stick their penis into. They think if they suck up to a woman enough, then said woman will notice that they exist.  Case and point, let’s go back to Hipster McGee and a video he made, where he buries his face firmly up Anita Sarkeesian’s ass.

Notice how McGee has to make sure to put out that he believes everything that Anita believes.  Notice how he makes very clear that she is absolutely right.  Oh, and also pay close attention to how much he says that the world needs what she has to say.  It’s almost astounding.

Like every Puritan Feminist, McGee has to say that the stuff where you are in a strip club is “misogynistic.”  Of course it is.  Because no guy who doesn’t TOTALLY hate women would go to a strip club, right?  And, of course, the strippers are all just objects, right?  It always marvels me how sex – modern feminism is.  Like all women who work in the sex industry are just exploited whores. Don’t take that from me.  Watch Sarkeesian’s video on “Women as Background Decoration.”  There, she blatantly says that women who work in sex (or fictional sex, as the case may be) are objects, viewed as objects by men in the real world.  What evidence does she have for this?  None.  None at all.  Her evidence is conjecture and speculation and HUGE assertions that are in no way backed by fact.  Actually, a recent study was done that shows that games do NOT cause sexism.  Evidence has a bad habit of unraveling the Puritan Feminist talking points, doesn’t it?

When you listen to McGee talk about how much we need Anita, citing what trolls say like it’s indicative for the community at large, you can’t help but think that you’ve heard this before, don’t you?  You can’t help but think that maybe this is nothing new.  Like maybe guys like him are many.  Men who can’t wait to tell Anita how awesome and smart and perfect she is.  Internet Aristocrat made a fairly fantastic video on the subject, which I recommend you check out.  See all the betas, working so hard to get their cookie from Anita-senpai.

Maybe you need a better example of betas and feminism.  That’s what it all amounts to. Beta males attach themselves to feminism, for the express purpose of wanting to get women to notice them.  They will swear up and down that they believe in the cause, but I guarantee that if you look at how much they work to kiss the ass of the women in that movement who have name recognition, then you will see these people for the sad little fanboys that they are, waiting to get a treat.

People like Hipster McGee and his ilk will tell us that women and minorities in gaming get so ragged on and mistreated.  That they feel so unwelcome.  Didn’t you see some of those comments?!  Women have mean things said to them!  The horror!  But let’s do a side-by-side comparison of XOXO Fest, an SJW event, and a fighting game tournament.  You tell me what you see.

DiversityYou now what I see at XOXO Fest – a lot of sad, pathetic, white men.  Men who believe that their senpai will notice them and that they are the ones who embrace diversity.  Another trait they all have in common – they are college age men.  The beta males go to colleges and are told about how awful men are, how “rape culture” is everywhere, and how women are so horribly mistreated and hated by society.  Three things that are blatantly untrue, but because they have no backbone and no ability to question things, they just take it at face value.  They “Listen and Believe.”

I became an atheist because I was disillusioned by the lies and manipulations of one religion.  Why on Earth would I join another?  Oh, and while we’re talking about diversity in gaming, here’s some screenshots from an event called “Celebrating Diversity.”

Celebrating DiversityBecause pink-haired white people is diversity, right?

RAB: Was it Murder…?!

I haven’t done a post like this in a long time.  I’m having a bad day, and I really felt like getting some random bullshit out into the world, to maybe get you, my audience, thinking about stuff.  I know, thinking is not the cool thing to do in modern America.  Humor me, will you?  Because there is some stuff that I’ve been thinking about that really got me all weirded out.  Like, what could be happening?  Oh yeah, some of this stuff is pretty nuts.  That and some good things are happening lately that I think is worth talking about.  So, without further adudes, let’s get down to it.

Internet Aristocrat is back!

I know, right?!  That made me happy too.  Call me a total fangirl (my inner woman comes out when I see his videos), but this made me so happy.  This guy needed to be here for a while.  Of course, the moment that he returns, my corner of the Internet lit up, with everyone being totally stoked.  And, in keeping with him being awesome, he put out another Tumblrisms video.  Here, see it for yourself.  It’s kind of nuts.

Yes indeed, Otherkin.  Another group of people who are totally effing with things.  I remember his video on Headmates, and that stuff was crazy enough.  But Headmates was worse, because it was so clear that those people were just making it up.  They said that they have headmates and are part of a “multiple system.”  But it’s all just them making it up.  Otherkins are a whole other kind of crazy.  These people are fucking nuts!  It’s not even funny how crazy they are.  And the worst part is – their delusions are being fed.  People actually feed this insanity.  Like that woman in the end of IA’s video.  She was feeding a woman who was either totally insane or pretending to be a cat, all to placate her.  That is insanity!  And I can go further.

Tumblr Otherkin get butthurt

I found out recently that Tumblr otherkin are a very easily butthurt bunch.  I decided to make fun of the concept with this little quip –

I identify myself as a pumpkin.  Triggers being – Jack-O-Lanterns, Thanksgiving and carving knives.

And I thought that I had just made a pretty good joke.  Indeed, someone hit the “Like” button, so that pleased somebody.  But the Otherkin crowd decided that they were very displeased with what I had to say.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that otherkin/therianthropy is the belief that mentally/spiritually you are not human. For some it has to do with past-lives, for some it’s a strong spiritual connection. We know we are physically 100% human! It also has nothing to do with gender/pronouns- anyone who says it does is a troll or very misinformed! Please try not to post that kind of stuff in the tag, okay? We’re just trying to have a nice night, and that really brings us down.

This ties in to something that IA also said, about the beginning of SJWs.  They came from a culture that tells everyone that they’re special.  Remember what I said about the woman treating a woman who clearly as mental problems like her problems aren’t bad at all?  I thought about doing a whole post on this, but I didn’t have enough to work with.  But now I do.  Otherkin are crazy.  These people are totally delusional.  I can look down on the Tumblrites who make up the Headmates bullshit as bad people, but these people are now laughing matter.  And this person wants me to check my behavior because it hurts his wittle feewings.  Well, sorry buddy, but I am going to make fun of this madness, and I do hope that the people like that woman who was licking her hands get help.  They so obviously need it.

Jurassic World is going to suck

They released a clip from the movie today.  And guess what it has – a bland, undeveloped romance between two characters.  Because that isn’t at ALL an overused plot device in monster movies, right?!  Seriously, watch that clip (linked here) and tell me if that looks like a good movie to you.

What if stupidity was murder?!

I’ve been playing Hitman: Absolution lately.  Fun game, with a story that is so awful.  For real, the level of dislikability of every character in that game that isn’t Agent 47 is a little jarring.  Even the Agency villain is a totally deranged, slovenly misogynist.  No joke, every woman in that game is treated like a toy by the villains.  I’m not having an SJW moment.  It’s a little annoying, to say the least.  Anyway, I was at a mission where you had to kill Lenny’s gang.  I was killing them inside Lenny’s house.  I got the last guy by dropping a chandelier on him.  That was pretty cool.  But it got me to thinking.

How many times do we read stories about some idiot who does something totally dumb and gets himself killed for it?  We all laugh and think to ourselves – what a dumbass!  For real, how can someone be that stupid?!  You see all these Darwin Awards, and it looks like stuff so stupid that it would have to be an accident, right?  Maybe not.  What if those events weren’t all accidents.  What if you had someone who framed the perfect murder by making it look like the person being killed is a total buffoon?  That makes it almost worse, because then we insult the memory of that person by laughing at them.  A pretty sobering thought, if you ask me.  Although, if you are looking to be a murderer, that could possibly be the greatest trick of all – exploiting how apathetic culture is and framing murder as stupidity.  I think that’s right brilliant.  Indeed, if, in real life, I had been able to kill someone by making it look like their dog had brought back their stick of dynamite that they had throw out to go ice-fishing, how many people would question that?  Or, if I stuck a hose up someone’s ass and gave them a booze enema until they died (I’m not even kidding, that’s one of the Darwin Awards deaths), how many of you would think that it was murder?  You’d laugh and think to yourselves – dumbass.  Then go about your day.

And if one was good enough at it, they could potentially keep that going, forever…

The Rebuilding Phase of #GamerGate

With the recent publication that GamerGate has cost Gawker seven-figures in advertising, and the egg that has gotten on the faces of all the people who were so central to the conflict, it is clear that the war that GamerGate was fighting has been won.  This is a great thing, but now there is another problem that comes to the forefront.  See, the war has been won.  Now the fighting has to turn to something else – rebuilding.  This is maybe the hardest part.  I think that this is what inevitably got to Internet Aristocrat.  He is a soldier who didn’t want to stop the fight.  But the war had to end, eventually.  With a new year upon us, there is a chance to make things better.  And you know what – it’s on all of us to make that happen.  Does this mean that we shouldn’t watch when the SJW Puritan feminist crowd decides to fuck with our hobby?  No.  And they seem to be moving on to other niche crowds like heavy metal.  I guess they think that they will get less resistance there or something.  Good luck with that.  But we can take the broken ruins of their pathetic journalistic “integrity” and forge it into something new.  Maybe we can help fix the Fifth Estate.  Who knows?  So, let me talk about what we need to do.

Here’s where we start – by realizing that modern media is all built on a flaw.  See, all media nowadays is a narrative.  It’s a narrative because you want clicks.  You want clicks, so you can get money.  You want money so you can keep your business running.  Do you see where I’m going with this?  Instead of reporting on events, all media, from the MSNBC and Fox News to the Kotaku, Polygon and Rock, Paper, Shotgun are controlling the events narrative.  This is something that we have to change.  There is no easy way to do this.  It has to be done with dedication.  It had to be done with an understanding that you may not get a mass market the way the rest do.  That’s hard.  It’s hard to understand that you are the underdog in any fight.  But if we are going to reshape gaming journalism, it has to start there.

Reporting fact just isn’t that fun to read.  I admit, I love to read an article here someone rips into some asshole who does something stupid or is a complete piece of shit, like the bulk of Congress.  But there are ways to make it so that news can be both informative and worth listening to.  Perhaps taking a few cues from Christina Sommers approach.  Or my favorite news program, Frontline.  Talk about something and show that you did your research.  Show that you are not just coming at this by appealing to pathos.  John Oliver is the master of this, on his new show on HBO.  He has made the news both funny and incredibly informative.  He is beating Jon Stewart at his own game.  Nothing against him, but hey, Stewart, Oliver’s got you whipped.  The trick for all these examples is that they go out of their way to show that they have got a ton of information about this and that it matters.  That’s good journalism.  It’s the kind of journalism that the glorified bloggers at Kotaku could never hope to do.

We also need to recognize that the people who say things like, “who hasn’t slept with a PR person or a dev, amirite?” don’t think that they did anything wrong, and that needs to change.  We’ve got to recognize where the boundaries of ethical and unethical journalism are.  There is a fine line on how cozy one can get to a group they are covering before it becomes unethical.  Sometimes that line is hard to know.  After all, any journalism student (and this comes from a grad with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Public Communication) is told that they have to cultivate sources and that you want your sources to feel good talking to you.  But we have to get gaming journalists to actually have a standard that they are held up to.  Kotaku and Gawker flaunt how little they care.  Look what it’s done for them.  All it takes is for one person to blow the whistle and then you have people like the guy who put out the “bring back bullying” Tweet becoming a public joke.  You think his career isn’t going to suffer because of that?  When he ha to polish up that resume, it’s going to come back on him big-time.  These people think it’s fine.  We have to be better than that.

Another thing we need to recognize is that the politicization that many in GamerGate have been against comes from a group of people who feel superior to everyone else, and think that their opinion means more because of whatever reason they feel that way.  This kind of thinking is easy to fall into.  I catch myself doing it from time to time.  When you look at all the stupid shit that so many people do and think to yourself – is this how retarded our species is? it’s easy to just take that thought process as gospel.  What the journalism industry needs is some humility.  Humility is a good way to not just get sucked into an echo chamber, but be willing to at least hear the other side out.  Name me an SJW who actually does that.  For real, I have NEVER see Anita Sarkeesian defend her points.  Nor Brianna Wu or anyone like that.  The conversation just breaks down into, “I get threats, I’m a victim, therefore I’m right.”  Good journalism has to press the issue.  Look at the UVA/Rolling Stone debacle.  This industry needs people who have passion, but want to learn more.  That’s why they used to have conversations in editing rooms about topics, where they would get people who wanted to talk about stuff, instead of just saying, “you – write about this!”

Lastly – do NOT let your site have a narrative.  If someone is going to have a narrative in their writing, then you take that person to task.  But one of the big things that came up from GamerGate was how people who were part of Gamejournopros were having their careers threatened if they didn’t tow the line.  If your organization has a narrative that they are willing to threaten your career over, then you are not a good publication, and not worth anyone’s time reading.

So, can this be done in the current framework of website?  No.  Kotaku will never get better.  They have been scarred and beaten and I bet are just singing now that the worst is done.  They were beaten like a bad dog and now are eager to get back to pandering the same bullshit that they always do.  We need a new group of sites that are willing to actually put good reporting and passionate writing ahead of site narrative.  I write for one such publication now.  It’s called Gambitcon, and I recommend checking it out.  Especially my stuff, because I’m just awesome like that.  Like this story here (click it!)

I don’t know if journalism can ever really be fixed.  Maybe it is just the way it is and there is nothing to be done about it.  However, the war is over, and it’s time for GamerGate to become Milo Yiannopoulos’ book and for all of us who fought to move to trying to make things better.  We won.  Now let’s capitalize on it.  The soldiers can go home.  A pity America can’t learn to do that, since we’re STILL in the Middle East.

A Book About #GamerGate? Sounds Good to Me!

So, Milo Yiannopoulos, the journalist rock star whose brutal articles have been part of the forward momentum of GamerGate is writing a book on the experience.  In an article on his site (linked here), he outlined why he believes that this is a cause worth writing about.  The man is right on point, as always.  Never before has a consumer revolt had as much sway as the GamerGate movement.  There has never been a push-back against SJWs and Puritan feminism like this one.  For the first time, modern, extreme, sex-negative feminism has met with real resistance.  And while their propaganda continues, the truth about the matter is finally starting to get out there.  The ruthless determination of the supporters of GamerGate made a movement come to pass that has never been seen before.

Of course, I hope that Milo remembers some of the casualties of the conflict.  I am still kind of bummed with how things ended with Internet Aristocrat.  One of the great leaders of the movement, he ended up leaving it after he became disenchanted with the endeavor, following some unpleasantness.  I’m glad that someone on YouTube was able to save all his stuff, because his videos are still great, even now.  His original videos about Quinnspiracy and how it pulled the veil off the controversy set the standard.  It began the battle.

Still, while there have been casualties, the war has had victories.  Several “journalists” have had their names dragged through the mud, like that puke-stain who suggested that we bring bullying back.  Speaking of Gawker, the most major victory is that the efforts of GamerGate have cost the company seven figures worth of lost ad revenue.  That is a powerful statement, and it says a lot about what this effort has been able to do.  Where once journalists seemed almost scared to support us, we have gotten people like the guy who gutted Ben Kuchera.  Along with support of more level-headed feminists like Christina Hoff Sommers, this movement is no longer just the victim-narrative with the poor SJWs as the afflicted and the gamers as evil misogynist neckbeards in basements.  The story has grown beyond that.

The fact that it still gets hits, even now, is telling about its efficacy.  This movement deserves to be talked about, because it is the first time that we have seen the consumers of a form of media lash out against the media they consume in a way that was this large and this coordinated.  During the Blitz phase of the conflict, GamerGate supporters were a concerted hammer against the people who opposed us.  That kind of action should be talked about, and if there is anyone to do it, it’s Milo.

All of those who have been with the revolt should feel proud.  We have won victories.  However, the battle isn’t over.  The Shock and Awe phase is done, but we have more to come.  And, given the thoughtful and smarmy way that his articles are written, this book should be quite something.  I hope to see it soon.

Internet Aristocrat Walks Away From #GamerGate

I noticed something the other day – a couple of videos that I favorited by a YouTube vlogger called Internet Aristocrat disappeared.  I gotta say, I’m kind of bummed about that.  I’ve been watching this guy’s stuff ever since he was making the Tumblrisms videos.  The first time I actually knew who he was was the response to #CancelColbert.  His videos are funny, well-researched and his voice is nice to listen to.  Plus, the picture he uses to represent himself is just awesome.  It has a staying power, much like Mykeru’s guy with the cow head and the knife behind its back.  He has left YouTube, Twitter, the whole nine yards.  He made a voice message as his farewell (linked here), and I suggest you watch it, because I think it is worth talking about.

You know, the first time that I heard about GamerGate was with the Internet Aristocrat’s video on the Zoe Quinn post.  He brought to light all of the corruption that got this ball rolling.  The Quinnspiracy videos were enlightening and really got me to looking at parts of the gaming media that I had always avoided.  It got me looking at lots of different stuff.  I got me wanting to get informed, so I could look at this and be a part of it.  Then, there was the GamerGate video that he did.  I kept waiting for a second, but it never came.  Now I know that it never will.  Internet Aristocrat was one of the key players who began the GamerGate movement.  Him and several others led the charge.  And when the battle was going strong, that was great.  A lot of stuff got done.  But now that the battle is no longer on one front, with a solid formation, he is leaving.  GamerGate isn’t doing what he wanted it to do anymore, and now he is walking.  That rubs me wrong.

Another YouTube personality I follow – Mundane Matt, raised a great point in a response he did to IA (linked here) – he didn’t want the fame.  He didn’t want to become this big icon in a consumer revolt.  Fame is a very big thing, that people take for granted.  With fame, there comes responsibilities.  I am not famous.  I know that.  I am coming up on 500 subscribers, here on WordPress, so I am just a drop in the bucket, compared to the amount that IA was about to achieve.  He was going close to 100,000.  That is big!  That’s among the peak personalities on YouTube.  I can’t imagine having that many.  But it is a responsibility.  I was watching old Nostalgia Critic videos, and he talked about this in a vlog he did as Doug Walker.  He talked about how people cared now what his opinion on stuff was, and he had to respect that, because he couldn’t just shit on his fans.  So IA didn’t want that responsibility.  I get that.  For real, I do.  I get that and I sympathize with it.

When I started this blog, I didn’t think that I would get more than a few dozen subscribers.  When I got over 100, I was amazed.  Back then, I was getting around 20-50 views per day.  Then, I did my first Character Analysis page, where I did an analysis of the Joker.  To this day, that post gets over 30 hits per day.  I never thought that I would be somebody who is known.  But you know what – this blog has gotten me two jobs as a contributor on two websites.  The first I walked away from.  Now I am writing regularly on a site called Gambitcon.  This blog has been looked up on websites that are professional analysis sites.  Professionals are looking at my page.  That fills me with a lot of awe and humility that I could get this kind of popularity.

So IA didn’t want the fame that came with becoming the tip of a spear that was leading the charge of GamerGate.  Well, dude, I’m sorry, but you have nobody but yourself to blame.  He says that he is annoyed at the appeal to moderates.  To me, that makes no sense.  Anybody who knows anything about politics knows that the only way you can really get things done is to appeal to the people in the middle.  The middle-ground crowd who doesn’t have feelings one way or the other.  You have to get those people on your side.  The Puritan Feminists knew it.  Why do you think that Anita Sarkeesian went on all the different news groups that weren’t Fox or CNN?  Because she knew that the best way for their side to win was for them to get the public at large to be on their side.  It nearly worked, too.  So GamerGate trying appeal to that crowd is smart.  You can’t just look to your base all the time.  ask the democrats how that went in the last election.

There is also the issue of people trying to capitalize on GamerGate.  Parts of that, I agree with, like the people who were trying to get Indiegogo and other projects going, using GamerGate to get financial backing.  Yeah, that’s a bit exploitative.  But then he brings up people who monetize their YouTube videos and stuff like that.  Dude, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make a little money.  It isn’t a lot.  It isn’t massive wealth.

In the end, it all seems to come down to this – Internet Aristocrat is a soldier.  He was in this battle to fight the good fight and he wanted GamerGate to be an all-out war.  Unfortunately, it couldn’t be that way forever.  For a time, it was, and it was amazing.  We got so much done during that point.  But eventually, it had to tone down and the elements had to have their own fronts.  Every war has its Blitzkrieg, Shock and Awe phase.  But then it becomes a battle of different fronts and different factions.  That’s the nature of the beast.  I’m sorry that you didn’t want to stick around for that.

GamerGate continues.  I don’t know for how much longer, but the movement does continue.  We are past the Blitz, and now we are each fighting our own battles.  Where will it all end up?  Who knows.  It could go either way.  I, for one, am glad to be a part of this.  There are problems, sure.  But what war doesn’t have them?

But don’t take this as me shitting on Internet Aristocrat.  I loved his videos, and truth be told, I am going to miss his content.  He was fun to watch and it is a genuine shame that it all turned out this way.  If and when he does keep coming back, I am sure that someone will link to me his stuff, and I will enjoy watching it again.
