A lot of people I was talking to on forums were more than a little confused about the fact that this game starts out with a choose-your-own-adventure style prologue. But I think it’s inspired. This game hinges on so much of it being kept going by dialogue between the two main protagonists. So how do they deal with the fact that this is going to be a very personal story? Easy – by having it so that there’s no exposition. You take care of that right at the outset, which frees up the writing to make the dialogue seem natural. It’s an inspired choice.
What’s more, this opening is where you show what kind of person you are. It’s a very depressing story, setting the stage for a man who is going out into the wilderness to find out what kind of person he wants to be. This is the opening that I chose. Enjoy.
Let me know what you think down in the Comments, and what your own playthroughs were like. While I do believe that the ending of this game is more than a little rushed, the first two-thirds is the best personal growth story I’ve ever seen, all done through beautiful visuals and dialogue. Take that for what you will.
