Hey Jim, You’re Slut-Shaming (A response to Jim Sterling)

Man, I have talked a lot about The Quiet, haven’t I.  Seems like everyone under the sun has a reason to complain about her.  ‘She’s practically naked!’  “Why doesn’t she wear camo?”  “How can you say that this isn’t objectifying?!”  Now we have another player to add to this, but it gives me a reason to talk about something that has caught my eye about all of this.  Jim Sterling proports to be the gaming critic who is for the little people.  Those who are trodden upon by the gaming establishment.  A noble goal, but it feels kind of full of shit when he panders a party line.  After all, in the debate about sexism in gaming, the gamers are most certainly the little people.  That’s hard to deny.  We have people all over the media shitting on us and our hobby.  So where are you, Jim?  You are on the side of people who want to shit all over women who take charge of their sexuality and aren’t ashamed of their bodies.  You are on the side of prudish demagogues who might as well ask for women to wear a hijab.  Given have vigorously these people defend Muslims, I wouldn’t be surprised.  What’s that?  How can I make that claim?  Well, let’s watch his video and you’ll see for yourself.  Then we’ll talk about it.

Jim, let me make one thing perfectly clear – you are slut-shaming.  You are perpetuating a mentality that claims that women who are choosing to bear their skin are objects and should be looked down upon.  You also shit all over the gamers, but I’m not even going to focus on that, because that’s fucking everybody in gaming media these days.  If it exists, it’s shame being heaped on us.  The people who are supposed to stand with us are turning their backs on us.  That’s what got GamerGate started in the first place.  You are one of them, Jim.  It can’t be argued at this point.

Let’s just talk about the fact that Jim has basically made the argument that everything about this character is sexist and awful, and what it says about Jim’s view of women.  Here’s a question, Jim – what is the appropriate level of sexual appeal for women to have?  I want to hear it from you.  After all, you are putting yourself as a moral arbiter of what should be acceptable.  So let’s hear it.  How much skin should a woman be showing before she should be viewed as an object?  Which is what YOU are doing, Jim!  Not me!  Not anyone who likes this character!  You are the one viewing her as an object to be ogled and desired.

This bugs me so fucking much, because I can’t be the only one who sees how sexist these people are.  There have to be more people, and we need to stand up and call out together – you are slut-shaming women!  By saying that a female character can’t be sexual or can’t have too much skin showing, you are basically saying that everything else about these women doesn’t matter.  All that matters is how they look.  The very thing that each and every one of you pro-social justice wankers say you are against, you are for.  Did you even take the time to learn about this character?  Did you take the time to learn about why she is the way she is?  Like the fact that she doesn’t just breathe through her skin, but also eats and drinks through it?

But Lucien, that’s just to titillate the audience!  She’s rolling around in a bikini in the rain!

So?  She literally intakes water through her skin.  She sees a great chance to take in water, so she does.  If it is makes sense, plot-wise, then what’s the problem?  Oh, right –

She’s demeaning because it is designed to appeal only to straight male players.

I have a lady-friend who is gay as the day is long, and she says that she would like nothing more than to motor-boat those tits.  Oh no!  Jim’s whole argument is crumbling around him!

So what if your gay friend wants her?  It was designed for straight cis-men!

So what?  Who cares what something was designed to do?  Let’s instead talk about what it does?  You ever read Mein Kampf?  I have.  Not because I think it was a good book.  I think it’s morally-reprehensible and disgusting.  But I read it.  Why?  Because it gives an insight into a mindset that destroyed so many lives, and what got the peopel who believe in that mindset to that place.  I think that that book is deplorable, and the people who follow it to be foul pieces of shit.  Though not all of them.  There are some amazing stories that came out of Germany of people who served in the Nazi military who tried to help Jews and were just trying to help their families.  They didn’t want to hurt anyone, but didn’t want their families to be disappeared and likely killed.  It was a time of fear and demagoguery, which stemmed from more than just hating Jews.  There was also the Treaty of Versailles, an egregious document that ruined the German economy and pushed them to desperation.  I read Mein Kampf not because I admire anything about that book, but because I wanted to learn about history and why someone so insane believed the way he did.

It does NOT matter why something was designed or what it was made for.  What matters is what it does.  The Quiet doesn’t turn women into objects. Jim.  She doesn’t make men into pigs.  She is a good character that you have reduced down to how she looks and how she dresses.  That is what YOU have done, you egotistical sack of shit.  It pisses me off how reprehensible you are, yet believe that you have the moral high ground over the rest of us.

How is this worldview accepted by people?  How am I the one who has to come on here and talk about why these people are everything they stand against?  Those of us who think this way have to stand up.  It’s time that we brought forth the debate and made the media take us seriously.  Which means that we have to argue this with logic.  We have to throw the half-ass logic of these people right square in their stupid fucking faces.  We have to bring the debate with reason and logical argument, not giving in to the emotional appeal that these people prey on.  There will NEVER come a day when Anita Sarkeesian is in a room with one of her countless reasonable detractors and answers for her statements.  But maybe we can get this guy to stand and face his accusers.  Maybe we can get one of them.  And maybe if we can get one of them, we can get more.  This can happen.

Don’t forget – it’s not just women in video games that these people are shitting on.  Women who take off their clothes in real life get the same treatment.  They are told about how much they demean women and turn women’s bodies into objects for men.  They are told that they have “internalized misogyny” and that it isn’t what they want to do.  No, it’s the patriarchy.  Here’s a link to an article about “feminist porn.”  You tell me if this sounds empowering.

As for you, Jim, I think that you are a complete sexist pig, who has decided to write off a very interesting character as – look at what she’s wearing!  You are putting her down for the express reason that you don’t like how she looks.  Your arguments for how her outfit is bad sound like arguments that you hear people who claim “she was asking for it” make.  I watched that video and all I could hear was the ramblings of a sexist asshole, who is accusing not only the gamers, but also the people who made this character, and the woman who modeled for the visual design, of being sexists too.  People who put hard work into making a good character, and a woman who lent her beautiful face and expressions to this character.  To be as sexist as you, Jim.  It must be nice.

Until next time, a quote,

“It’s discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit.”  – Noel Coward

Peace out,

Maverick
