#GamerGate: Anita, I Want to Tell You Something Important

I have watched the interview of Anita Sarkeesian on The Colbert Report.  I called it, the interview was all about how Anita is a victim and we gamers are bad people.  I am not surprised by this in the least.  When you have a battle where it is the people who take in journalism vs. the journalists, this is how it goes.  Journalists side with their own, and because mainstream culture is out of touch with the issues that sparked GamerGate, on the heels of some BRILLIANT marketing by women like Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian, we are being singled out as the enemy.

However, I don’t want to focus on old territory.  Anita, I actually was hoping to talk to you directly.  The likelihood that you’ll ever read this is nil, but hey, I’m giving it a shot.  I first want to tip my hat.  When I saw you walk on to Colbert’s stage with that big shit-eating grin, I was almost impressed.  To quote the film Contact, “(s)he sure knows that (s)he’s on TV.”  Followed up by another quote that seems fitting, “Back home we called that an overcooked ham.”  You are the single-greatest professional victim I have ever seen.  You have branded your name and gotten fame all on the coattails of you being a victim.  Your audience doesn’t care about why of who.  They only care that you are upset, and they are upset.  You know how easy it is to exploit your audience, so you do.  That is impressive.

That said, I want to level with you.  Anita, where do you see yourself going?  It’s so clear to people like me, who don’t immediately buy your schtick, that you are a con artist.  I don’t believe that you buy your schtick for a minute.  I saw that old video of yours.  The one where you said that you were trying to find a way to make money, at this conference when you were much younger.  And so, a zealot by the name of McIntosh got ahold of you, and thus began your rise to fame.  For McIntosh, I believe that it is genuine.  I’ve read some of his older stuff, and that guy is a Looney Tune.  But you, you are too smart for that.  You’ve come to realize how easy it is to sell your cause.  After all, you got your cause to get you $160,000.

And don’t tell me how far that money went.  Come on.  You made videos that were of the same caliber as your old ones.  Your ‘research’ was using people’s Let’s Play footage.  You never show any context in your videos, because you don’t know any.  You didn’t even do the bare minimum of research.  This was just finding clips and using the right rhetoric to get your audience to get all huffed-up and angry.  It was a calculated decision.  A lot of people who dislike you may disagree, but I have the same opinion of you that I do of Ray Comfort.  You are both charlatans who are VERY good at what you do.

But where do you see this ending?  You act like you’re Salmon Rushdie, when the truth is that you are somebody who gets harassed online.  Just like EVERY other person with fame.  For real, watch some of the “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets” videos.  There isn’t a single famous person with an online account who doesn’t get a lot of WEIRD responses.

I’ve got a little piece of information for ya – I’ve gotten death threats.  That’s right, a guy on WordPress with a pretty decent amount of followers (coming on 500, and that’s just on WordPress) has gotten death threats.  I get them from Fundie Christards who get all butthurt about me speaking ill of their fictional deity.  Everybody gets angry statements from people who get all butthurt and upset.  At first, maybe these did hurt your feelings or make you feel uncomfortable, but the reality can’t be denied after having seen your interview with Colbert.  You are now famous because of the threats.  You are famous because of the anger, which you are able to hold up.  That recent threat that you got when you were going to speak at USU, you couldn’t have asked for better timing.  It elevated you to mainstream acceptance.  Now, I bet raising another $160,000 would be child’s play.  Hell, I bet that you are going to get a lot of money from here.

Which I believe is why you have been doing this.  This was all calculated.  But the reality is that there is the same end for your online crusade.  The truth is that women in the Western World are not being oppressed.  I’m sorry, but it’s true.  You have all the rights that men do.  While there are some issues to iron out, like the wage gap, you are unable to show real oppression.  It’s all just something that McIntosh believes he is fighting a holy war against.  And you are making money from.  But the sad truth is that this can’t go on forever.  Once your little crusade is worn out and has lost momentum, because the girls who are in support of you grow up and get real lives and real responsibilities that don’t include them living at home and always being on Tumblr, then where will you go?

A lot of people’s professional careers have been utterly destroyed by GamerGate.  The writers of Kotaku, Gawker and the like are losing all credibility, like that fellow who said that “we need to bring bullying back.”  Where do you think he will end up?  Your 15 minutes of fame are probably far from over, but the truth is – you won’t have this forever.  Enjoy it while you can.

Because once McIntosh has nothing left and you are on your own, you’ll have to find a new con.  Hey, maybe you could go to Jack Thompson and get on his old bandwagon of video games causing violence.  It’s still a go-to line these days.

You are a con artist, Anita.  A very, very good con artist.

“Con artist. Flim flam man, matchstick man, loser. Whatever you want. Take your pick.”  -Roy Waller, Matchstick Men

#GamerGate: Anita Sarkeesian on The Colbert Report. Damn…

I make no secret of my love for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.  Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are probably the most insightful people speaking about news that we have nowadays.  They take all the bullshit in the news and lay it straight.  However, they know their limits.  They know that there are lines that they cannot cross.  There have been moments where I have seen them tow the line, when they know it has to be done.  And a recent piece of news about an event that is coming on Colbert’s show has me really feeling bummed, because I know what is going to happen.

For those unaware, an announcement has been made that Anita Sarkeesian is going to be on The Colbert Report in the very immediate future, to discuss GamerGate and, as always, the harassment she has received.  Naturally, I am sure that she is loving this.  Getting media attention for her professional victimhood has been something that Anita has been enjoying since all of this started.  She has gotten into the spotlight like never before, thanks to the left-leaning media, that has show that it will tow the line of the far-left causes, so as not to alienate a very vocal group.

So, how does this relate to GamerGate?  Well, we’ve already seen it, haven’t we?  When you have a movement that is, quite literally, the people who take in the news vs. the news, what do you think is going to happen?  It’s obvious.  The news will make us out to be the bad guys, who are being mean and awful to the poor media.  We saw it in the response of the Gamejournopros little cabal.  They united and went after gamers in a big way.  They went after gamers so hard that they overextended.  Now, websites like Gawker and the like are losing advertisers, who no longer want to be associated with websites that are going out of their way to fling shit in the faces of their consumers.  GamerGate is winning a lot of victories against the corrupt journalism that got all this rolling.  A lot of careers are going to be ruined because of this, probably forever.  The extreme-left has gone too far, and now they are choosing to try and stay the course, believing that they can ride this out.

This whole deal with Sarkeesian is part of that.  Make no mistake, she is a player.  She has played this latest hand of hers to the fullest of her ability.  While she is only a mouthpiece of McIntosh, she isn’t stupid.  The girl has become quite skilled at being a professional-victim/con artist.

Now, where does Colbert fit into this?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  Does anyone remember the shitstorm that followed after Suey Park accused him of racism because of a Tweet that she took out of context?  When Colbert finally did respond to that, he did so with humor and grace, while not going after her in a big way.  He just shrugged it off.  To be fair, that was a good response.  It was a stupid issue, and it shouldn’t have become a big battle.  But that response is telling.  It tells us that he is going to probably go with the line.  He’ll keep in character of a right-wing pundit, but he will still tow the line.  He knows what his limits are.  If he goes after the establishment, then he is risking his career.  After all, he lost to Suey Park, and is being relegated to replacing David Letterman.

Maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe he will be the first person in the media to actual ask hard-hitting questions, instead of the softball bullshit that we have seen on MSNBC and every other major outlet that has talked about GamerGate and Anita herself.  Maybe he will be the first person who will actually take her to task for her lies and misconceptions, along with her professional-victim routine.  Maybe that will happen, but I doubt it.  And that really does bum me.  But we shall see, won’t we?

Here’s hoping that Colbert has the guts to do the right thing and call out this woman on her bullshit.

The River of Light

I shall tell you now, of something I have seen.  I have seen it twice in my life, and now I am unable to look away.  For what I have seen is something so amazing that it is beyond understanding.  Yet there is a side to this amazing thing that is dangerous.  So dangerous, yet utterly intoxicating.  To those who are unprepared, you will be carried away by it, unable to return.  You are probably wondering what I’m talking about.  Well, I shall tell you, because I want the world to know what I have seen.  Most people cannot look at it for more than a minute before being swept away by it.  I have been staring directly at it for years.  Ever since I nearly traveled with it, to where it merges with others like it, to form a connection that runs through the whole universe.  I am telling you all, I have seen it.  Now, you shall know how.

I first saw it when I was barely born.  I was born too early, and my body was not ready to survive.  I saw it when it nearly carried me away.  However, that was too early to remember.  Still, it was our first encounter.  The second time was when I was fourteen.  I suffered a severe head injury.  Cracked my skull open on a rock.  This was the time that I got to know this event very personally.  I was in a coma for almost a month, and we did what most are unable to fathom – we immersed ourselves in it.  We became one with it.  It was such an amazing feeling.  When we were pulled out, it broke our heart, because all we have wanted since is to rejoin it.  Yet we lack the conviction to do so.  All we can do is stare at it from afar.  Are you dying to know what it is?  Wait just a little longer.  There is more you need to know.

There is a connection to all things in this universe.  It isn’t divine.  There are no deities.  This connection transcends all that.  It has had many names, over the years.  People have seen it, as I have, so it has many names.  But this connection flows everywhere.  Through this universe, tying the worlds, galaxies and universes together.  It has existed since time began, and when it ends, time ends.  All things are part of it, and vice-verse.  By now you must be dying to know.  You have been patient.  Here is what it is –

River of Light 4It is the River of Light.  We saw it when we were in a coma.  We were dead, for under a minute.  As our body was in that place, time had no meaning.  Space had no meaning.  For you see, there is no form there.  It is neither Heaven nor Hell.  It is something so much more.  All the knowledge that has ever been or will ever be is in that place.  All life that has ever been or will ever be.  It is a keeper of memories.  But so much more than that.  More than there are words to describe.  We shall try and put it into words for you, but the truth is that you must see it for yourself to truly understand what it is.  It must be experienced for yourself.  But how?  After all, did we not say above that it can be dangerous to stare at for too long?  You are wise to heed those words.  For the average person, this can be very true.  Looking at its beauty can be enough to pull in the person with the strongest will.  We became part of the River, for a time.  Imagine what it is like for us.  For you see, we have a secret – we have been staring at the River for years.  Ever since we were pulled away.

But does one have to die to see it?  That is a good question.  And one we can answer.  No, you do not have to die to see the River of Light.  There is a way.  It’s tricky.  Most people will dismiss this as silliness.  Maybe they’re right.  Maybe we are being ridiculous.  But, I know what I have seen.  I know where I have been.  If only you could understand that place.  It is the eternal keeper of knowledge.  I could see all the worlds that have been.  Vast metropolises that are populated by creatures that are beyond your wildest imagination.  Lands that have massive creatures, doing the dynamic of predator and prey.  Giant mammals, reptiles, you name it.  Even some creatures that defy description.  Great civilizations going to the stars.  Others being blown to bits by their own foolishness.  Sound familiar?  Indeed, so many futures for humanity.  It was almost too much.

River of Light 3Back to the issue at hand, however – seeing the River of Light.  Pay attention,, because I am going to tell you how.  Here’s the answer – you must bathe yourself in darkness.  There must be no light, that you can see.  Then, you must close your eyes.  Even more darkness.  But that’s not enough.  When your eyes are closed, see in your mind.  See a second set of eyelids.  You must close them.  When you have done this, look around.  It might be above you, it might be below.  The light will beckon you to see it.  There, the River of Light shall appear.  It will captivate you, as it captivated me.  However, traveler beware.  You must not stare too long!  Do so, and you will be condemned to be lost in the darkness.  You don’t want to live like that.  You don’t want to be as well are.  See, we have been looking at the River all night, every night, for years.  We were a part of it.  If you reach out to it, if you try and touch it, you will be taken by it.  You will be caught up in it and that will be it.  It is the ultimate beauty, but also the ultimate danger.

The thing is, that River is what connects everything in this universe.  It is the great consciousness that we all become a part of when we die.  There is no Heaven or Hell.  You don’t get punished forever for whatever arbitrary reason that a deity says you do.  The River is all things.  It connects every star, every planet, every galaxy, and all the universes too.  This River connects all living things too.  When you feel your heartbeat quicken as your body becomes entangled with the person you love, that is the River in both of you merging together, if only for a few moments.  This connection transcends time and space.  And when you die, and your essence becomes part of the River, you don’t have to be afraid.  Form means nothing there.  You can explore history, time, space and all the other things.  You have no idea how freeing that is.  After all, you haven’t been there yet.

However, there is nothing in this world so beautiful as the River of Light.  Of course, maybe we’re wrong.  We are condemned to live in darkness because of our fixation.  Maybe in the light, there is something more beautiful.  We wouldn’t know.  Now, all it does is blind us.  A sad fate indeed.

Until next time, a quote,

“All the world’s a stage.  All the men and women merely players.  They have their entrances and exits, and one man in his time plays many parts.”  -William Shakespeare

The Value of Connections: Past, Present, and Future

I recently got home from a meeting with a friend of mine.  Well, I’m not quite sure if friend is the right word.  See, a bunch of shit happened a couple years back, and now I am talking to her again.  I don’t really know where we are, which makes what is coming next even more awkward.  But her and I are still able to hold a conversation for hours on end.  We can still be amicable, just like the old days.  It makes how it all went down between us that much worse.  But I won’t go there.  Been down that road, but the idea was to move forward.

Our conversation today veered into a fact that is both cruel and inevitable – we are going our own ways.  For me,I am heading out of the town I live in.  After losing the apartment I was sharing with my ex, I returned home.  I tried to rekindle my social life and find something worth bonding to here.  However, it was all for naught.  Due to forces beyond my control, I was unable to make time with people.  They all kind of moved on and left me Lonely Roadwondering what happens next.  I am very much the odd-man-out.  I have nothing going for me here, but there is something in the city where I was living in.  So, I mean to return there.

And that’s where the bummer part with this friend came in.  The reality is that when I leave my hometown for the last time, I may never see any of these people again.  And this saddens me, because it marks a turning point in life.

My friend is also there.  She is looking to leave Alaska and pursue grad school.  She wants to accelerate her career.  That’s smart.  Still, she is lamenting the amount of relationships that she will likely lose as a result of this.  It didn’t get said, but I understood that my friendship was almost surely among them.  This is especially depressing, considering that I have just been trying to get it back.  Some people have not gotten why, so I guess I’ll explain.

I believe something.  Something core to myself as a person.  I believe that the relationships that we culminate along the paths of life are the only thing that really matters.  When I die, some people will remember me as that guy with the blog they read.  Though not for long.  I’m just one blog among the vast ocean.  That is something that will fade with time.  I’m not going to be memorialized in some great museum of writing.  I know that I’m not Hemingway.  So what will be remembered of me?  What legacy will we leave behind, if only for a lifetime?

It is my belief that it will be the people whose lives I touch.  There was this great descriptive term in the REALLY pretentious film Meet Joe Black, where a Jamaican woman described how she remembered her long life, when she is talking to Joe about going with her into Death.  She described it as ‘ If we lucky, maybe, we got some nice pictures to take with us.’  That’s a nice way to put it.  I have some absolutely amazing pictures in my life.  I may be depressing and suffer from depression, but I’m not so fargone that I don’t have pictures in my life that are beautiful.

LakeThere are the summer days that I spent on the lake, with the first girl I ever loved.  We swam, laughed, laid out in the sun, letting it dry us.  There were the nights that my first friend and I talked about the country we would make and how the people would live there.  There are the days that I was talking to my grandma in the summer.  Summer.  Some of the summers that I have as a kid, so beautiful.  The wind, the trees, the smell of the air.  There is my first kiss.  It was so anticlimactic.  It came out of nowhere.  She looked so sad.  We had been talking about serious stuff.  It got heavy.  There was the Periodicals Room, with a girl who still means everything to us, even after how some things happened.  Holding her as she cried, trying to hold it all together.  She’s so strong.  She refuses to let herself show weakness, so when she trusted us to let us see that, it was amazing.  I remember the butterflies in my stomach afterwards.  It was amazing.  I remember rescuing a friend who had been abandoned at the bar by her friends.  The way she ran into my arms when I showed up.  I felt like a knight in armor, holding a bloody sword, with a field of fallen foes behind me.

These are my nice pictures.  Now the question becomes – have I put any nice pictures into the heads of anybody else?  Have I given anyone else something to fondly keep with them, when I am no longer around?  What about her?  Have I given her any nice pictures, if we do end up parting for good?  The pictures that we leave each other are the things that truly matter.  It’s easy to say that you have lead a full life, but the truth is – you have only lead that life when you have left memories in those who matter to you.  It can’t just be you.  A full life will undoubtedly affect other people.

So what does that mean in respect to me and my efforts to rekindle a friendship that may last for just another month?  It means that I am going to keep going.  Even if it all does amount to jack-diddle, I want to get a few more pictures.  I want to leave her with a few more pictures.  Things got so ugly before.  This is a chance to let things go on a note of happiness.  Isn’t that what any decent person would want to do?  I will miss her, if our time together ends in January.  It will hurt, knowing that this is it, and we will never get another chance.  But I have pictures in my head, and I will keep those pictures with me.  I hope she will too.

What pictures have you left behind?  What pictures do you keep with you?  Feel free to let me know in the comments section.

Until next time, a quote,

I don’t think you can analyze love. It’s the greatest mystery of all. No one knows why it happens, or doesn’t. Love is a chance combination of elements. Any one thing might be enough to keep it from igniting – a mood, a glance… a remark. And if we could define love, predict it – it would probably lose its power.” -Neelix, Star Trek: Voyager

SIONR: Katniss vs. Ellie

I recently read an article that said that Katniss Everdeen from the teen books and film series ‘The Hunger Games’ is the greatest heroine of our time.  That is…ridiculous.  For real, that is the most insane thing.  I genuinely don’t get who buys into that.  Obviously, the lunatic teen girl fans of the book would.  Naturally.  But who else?  Well, we do live in the era of Twitter and Tumblr feminism, and her character is practically made to please that type of person.  Now, to preface this, I am going to talk about her character in the films.  In the books, there were definite flaws to address.  But in the movies, she is stoic, overly-strong, stone-faced and needs no man to help her.  In other words, she’s the ubermensch for women.  But is she the greatest female protagonist of our time?  Well, the answer to that is easy – no.  There is another who comes off the top of my head who kicks her ass in every way.  I shouldn’t need to say this, but *spoiler alert* or the content ahead.  The character is Ellie, from the greatest game of last year, ‘The Last of Us.’

Katniss EverdeenFirst, let’s examine Katniss, so we can get all our ducks in a row.  She is part of a world that is oppressive to poor people.  Unnecessarily so, considering how they have technology that can spawn animals out of nowhere.  Katniss is a poor person who, in the films, is in remarkably good health.  For real, I didn’t see a single sign of starvation on that girl.  Though that wouldn’t appeal to the teenage girl audience – a girl who looks anorexic.  Might send the wrong message.  She is involved in one of the stupidest systems of picking someone ever, that would be so easy to fuck with.  For real, if the amount of entries controls how much food you get, why not have the entire town declare someone to be the candidate, train them to be the ultimate killer and then share the wealth of the food.  Later on in the first film, it seems that other Districts might have figured this out.  But I digress.

Katniss’ sister is picked, and she then volunteers to go instead.  So, self-sacrificing to save her family.  That’s cool.  She gets picked, and is shown to be willing to take stupid risks to impress potential benefactors, like when she shoots the space next to that one dude’s head.  I would have thought that that was a failed assassination attempt, given how they just watched her miss a shot in a big way.  Also, she has no backbone.  She is in a car with a rich woman, who is clearly unarmed and defenseless.  Given that her entire part of the world is oppressed, it never occurred to her to kill her?  Or maybe hold her hostage?  Anything?  Not to mention – she is on a television show that everybody is watching before the Games, and she doesn’t go all George Carlin and scream “what the fuck is wrong with you people?!  Seriously, do you all not realize how crazy this is?!”  For all the stoic strength she is supposed to have, there are a TON of instances where she doesn’t do shit when she should obviously have done something.  But then we wouldn’t have the PG-13 violence that is really unbelievable.  It makes the fact that Katniss routinely avoids danger by running or hiding look that much worse.

When she finally is the victor, the girl is like a lost puppy.  She sees everything going to shit all around her, and she does jack-diddle.  In the second film, up until Hunger Games II (for real, it’s the exact same thing over again), she does nothing.  It’s kind of pathetic.  Districts are rising up, looking to her as their inspiration, and she does nothing.  There is an instance with a dude getting beaten, but that’s it.  You volunteered for a death battle to save your little sis.  How’s about throwing in for the people risking their ass because you inspired them?

And don’t even get us started on the “romance” between her and Peeta.  For real, that is the most forced relationship ever.  EVER!  There is no chemistry.  They never seem to grow.  The only reason she kissed him was because a sponsor told her to, if she wanted some of the stuff he could magically teleport to her.  It lacks all believability, but they’re attractive, so people buy it.  Teen girls are dumb like that.  Oh, and could she PLEASE look something other than serious?  For real, have some kind of other emotion.  You’re like Bella Swan, in that regard.

Ellie 2Now, let’s look to Ellie.  This girl grew up in a world that is infinitely more oppressive than Katniss.  It is a post-apocalyptic nightmare.  She lives in a walled city that is defended by the remnants of the military, who make up a dictatorial government.  All children are raised in a special “school” that is more of an orphanage and training facility, where they are raised and trained to kill dissidents, like the Fireflies.  Unlike Katniss, Ellie is thrown into her situation by circumstances out of her control.  When she discovers that she is immune to the fungus that has destroyed humanity, she faces that down and wants to do what she can.  This is partly tied up in how many people she has lost in her lifetime, but that’s a whole other thing.

This girl is not like Katniss.  She is not just strong and stoic.  She’s a kid.  She has childish moments and childish views on certain things.  But she isn’t above sticking up for her people.  When she first meets Joel, she tries to stab him, because she believes that he has hurt the woman looking after her, Marlene.  When she sees that Joel is cold towards her, she is the same to him.  But, like a real kid, she tries to be his friend.  That’s how kids do.  They want to bond with someone that they feel they can trust.  But her companion has his own baggage that he is dealing with.  But the two grow on one-another.  That’s another defining character trait that differs from Katniss.  Ellie isn’t just super-strong, able to face down the world.  She needs help, and she knows it.  Part of her fear in being alone is that she has lost so many people who have tried to help her.

Which brings us to her relationship with Joel.  The defining relationship of the game is between the two of them.  It is the center around which the entire game revolves.  At its core, ‘The Last of Us’ is a story about two people who find something in one-another that makes them able to live again.  It’s not some big story about saving the world, though there are elements of that in there.  It’s about two people and the love that forms between them, along with how far they will go to save each other.  Some have said that Ellie has “daddy-issues’ because of certain segments of the game where Joel looks after her and she breaks down with him.  These views are from people who have clearly never played the game, so they have no context.

See, in real life, nobody is just self-assured and able to take on all elements of the world stoically.  In real life, people have problems.  People have flaws.  People have baggage.  People have weaknesses.  Ellie has a deep-seated fear and belief that she will always be alone.  Time and time again, people in her life die, often in terrible ways.  Whenever she feels that she can hope, something comes into her life to break that.  Joel is the only person who has stuck with her.  He has risked his life for her.  The paternal relationship that develops between them is strong specifically because it is believable.  You can feel the span of time that their love grew.  The passing seasons mark a change in their dynamic.

But Ellie is no pushover.  Despite being a kid, she’s been toughened up by the world she lives in.  When Joel is injured, and she is alone, you see a side of her that is scared, trying to hold together.  She can not only handle a bow.  She can handle a pistol, a rifle, nail-bombs and a shotgun.  Let’s see Katniss do that!  For real, let’s see her blow some bandit’s brains out.  That would have made the BORING Hunger Games PG-13 violence more interesting.  Not to mention believable.

So yeah, Katniss has got shit on Ellie.  Can Ellie get some recognition, now?  Oh, wait, she’s a video game character.  I forgot that video games are still looked down upon by the academic and mainstream types.  Silly me…

Until next time, a quote,

“Everybody I’ve ever cared about has either died or left me!  Everybody, fucking except you!  So don’t tell me that I’d be safer with somebody else!  ‘Cause the truth is that I’d just be more scared.”  -Ellie, The Last of Us

You Mean Well, But I’m Not With You (A Response to Emma Watson)

So, I only just recently watched Emma Watson’s speech to the UN about how men and women should join with her in calling themselves feminists, and how this is something that men should be just as active and outspoken as women about.  I have heard her speech a few times, and I have actually tried to think this out and word it in a way where I can be respectful, yet still be critical, because I respect Watson.  She is probably the only person who can leave the world of acting and go much higher up in it.  That’s impressive.  However, let’s talk about her speech.

Look, Emma, there’s a key problem that you are unable to overcome in your speech.  It’s something that I am sorry to say bogs down your belief in equality between both genders.  That is a good way to look at this issue, and I’m with you whole-heartedly, believe it or not.  But the reality is that, in the 1st world, this issue has gotten so utterly divisive that you would have to repair a lot of rifts to make your vision work.

For starters, there’s Tumblr and Twitter feminism.  Women who are complaining about things that have no bearing on gender equality and are only something that they want to be mad about.  You have women like Anita Sarkeesian, going after women in video games like that is indicative of some kind of culture of misogyny.  Or that it promotes misogyny.  This is the same flawed reasoning that people who say that video games cause violence use, and there has been absolutely ZERO evidence for either position.  But to these people, it doesn’t matter.  Facts mean nothing.  When you can have a woman holding up a sign and saying that she needs feminism because of “stare rape,” then how can you expect other people to believe in it.  And I have no doubt that a lot of women are with you on your points.  For real, I have no doubt.  But the reason that the label of feminism is so tarnished in this country is because of people like the SJWs and their ilk on social media.  They don’t want discussion.  They want capitulation.  They want men to go away, because in their eyes, men are the problem.

I CANNOT judge a group of people by the best of what it has to offer.  I’m sorry.  I wish I could.  I wish I could turn a blind eye to people like Anita Sarkeesian.  But the problem is that they are not only getting Internet attention, they are now getting mainstream attention.  MSNBC recently did a story where they painted the issues of #GamerGate that myself and other have – ethics and ethical reporting in gaming journalism – and made it like we are just woman-haters who don’t like that women are in video gaming.  Those of us who try and talk to women like Sarkeesian logically and without becoming a tirade of expletives are belittled and ignored, because that doesn’t help the message.  I did not see a SINGLE person on MSNBC’s broadcast who explained our side.  They just had two people who made us out to be villains.  This is becoming the mainstream position of the far-left.  As a woman who made a video belittling the Tumblrites pointed out – it’s like everyone is in a rush to be the most progressive.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with them, this is the company which you keep.  Unless you decry them, publicly and with conviction, it’s no different than moderate Christians who keep quiet when Fundies go off.  It’s easier to stand by your sisterhood than to fight against it.  That’s something that we can’t abide.

What’s more – women who are empowered enough to speak out against these women are then targeted by them.  These people are like a pack of rabid dogs, looking for targets to chow down on.  That’s what feminism is becoming in America, because women like you are a very quiet bunch about the outspoken misandry that Tumblr and Twitter feminists espouse.  I’m sorry if this sounds rude.  I mean no disrespect.  But I hope you can see where I’m coming from, here.

And I want to commend you for bringing up the plight of women outside the first world.  Here’s something that you and I could stand together on.  I would LOVE to see the women of India or Saudi Arabia or places like that would embrace the feminism of the early 1900’s.  A suffragette-style movement would do loads of good in those parts of the world.  If you were to lead a movement with that ideal in mind, I would be behind you, 100%.  So would most men and women, I bet.

But at the end of the day, I cannot and will not call myself a feminist.  Nor am I a male-rights activist.  Here is what I am – a self-determination gender-egalitarian.  A mouthful?  Perhaps.  It is, however, the closest thing that I can think of to describe how I see gender and the issue that we have.  I want all people, men and women, to have the same rights.  Man, woman, gay, straight.  Equality shouldn’t be a gender thing, it should be a human thing.  And I bet you that we could see eye-to-eye, if I were remotely popular enough to ever meet you in person.  I do respect you and it was a good speech.  However, feminism in the Western World needs help.  It needs a lot of help.  Because Tumblr and Twitter is making it look astoundingly bad.  Do with that whatever you will.

Lucien’s First Take: Avengers: Age of Ultron

It’s finally here!  An actual trailer that isn’t just people saying random things for the upcoming sequel to Avengers.  The first film was a great action flick and was fun to watch, but it was about as nice and frilly as it got.  It was NOT a dark movie.  It had dark elements, but they never really went much of anywhere, and we all knew that the heroes were going to win, in the end.  With this trailer, they finally decided to give the upcoming film some atmosphere, and it is so awesome.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.  Here is the trailer, for your viewing pleasure –

So yeah, I fucking love this trailer!  It looks so totally awesome!  It grabs my attention right off the bat with the voice of the villain, Ultron.  And who is doing the voice?  Why, none other than James Spader, one of my favorite actors!  I loved him in Stargate.  I loved him in The Practice and its spin-off, Boston Legal.  I have been loving his character in The Blacklist, as probably one of the best anti-heroes that I have ever seen in anything.  Ever.  When I read that he was doing the voice of Ultron, I knew that it would be good, but hot damn!  This is fucking amazing!  Spader has this dark presence that never gets fully appreciated.  It’s the reason that he is so good in The Blacklist as Raymond Reddington.  He’s a character who you never really know who’s side he’s on.  It’s a role that is perfect for Spader.  With Ultron, in this trailer, it appears like he was kind of fucked over by Tony Stark, and now he’s looking for payback.  And this guy means business!  He’s clearly in this to fuck with all the Avengers.  He’s got a beef and he’s gonna settle it.

That’s where our heroes come in.  I’ve been hearing about the Marvel Civil War saga being made into a movie.  Now, it looks like that’s a reality.  The Avengers are not as tight as they once were.  Something happens in this film, having to do with Ultron, and it is splitting the Avengers apart.  Thor picks up Tony Stark by the throat.  You see him, Captain America, Romanov and Bruce Banner in the jet without him.  But the best clue is that we finally see one of Stark’s greatest armors – the Hulksmasher!  An armor suit made for the express purpose of fighting with the Hulk.  You see the two throwing down, and it doesn’t look pretty.  Whatever got them there is bad.  In another shot, you see Iron Man, standing alone.  Are the Avengers done?  That’s an exciting thought.

Another neat twist is Scarlet Witch and Quiksilver.  Last we saw, they were being held in Hydra’s castle.  We see a scene where Ultron is standing in that castle, with the two of them.  It’s obvious that he rescued them, and they seem to be pretty tight with the guy.  However, we see another scene where Quiksilver is saving Captain America.  What happens to get them to the Avengers?  Or are they?  It’s clear that their plot is going to be complicated, and that’s fine with me.

But the biggest indicator that shit gets real in this film is when you see Captain America’s broken shield.  That thing is an amalgamation of Adamantium and Vibranium.  That thing shouldn’t be able to be destroyed!  Whatever does this isn’t playing.  Also, given how this is Ultron’s first major appearance, and what a boss he seems to be, I bet you that he’s not done by the end of this film.  I bet that it gets even better, from here.

All-in-all, this trailer looks amazing.  I am so stoked for this movie.  I haven’t been this giddy for a comic book movie since I saw the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, and I have no doubt that this movie will not disappoint.  I already have a friend in mind who I am going to see it with.  Hopefully it lives up to the hype.

What stuck you to you most in this trailer, and are you excited for this movie as well?  Let me know in the comments section.

What I Really Want for My Birthday

My birthday’s coming up soon.  When exactly it is is something I’m not comfortable telling all of you.  Sorry, we just aren’t that tight.  But it’s in the not-too-distant future and I have been thinking about how old I’ve gotten.  Kind of staring down the barrel of adulthood, and it isn’t a pleasant feeling.  I keep wanting things to change, and have been working to make that happen.  Alas, my efforts have been for naught.  Something we don’t teach kids anymore – you can bust your ass and try your hardest and still fail.  It’s an important lesson, but people don’t want to talk about that anymore.  It’s easier to just talk about happy stuff.  People do like sunshine blown up their ass.

I made a list of stuff that I wanted for my birthday and Christmas.  Might as well make it simple, right?  It wasn’t an especially long list.  I’m not nearly as materialistic as I used to be.  I have kind of realized that the things that I truly want can’t be bought at a store.  They can’t be given to me in the way that someone thinks about.  They have to come from somewhere else.  Somewhere better.  I got to thinking – what do I really want for my birthday?  Well, I came up with a more reasonable list of the things that I wish I could have for the day when I was brought into this shitty world.

Some Company

My attempts to reclaim a social life, ever since I lost the apartment that my ex and I shared.  I had a bunch of people that I know and I thought that I could reclaim some of my old socialization.  However, that was a big wasted effort.  It seems that in my time away, the world moved on.  I should have seen that coming.  I mean, why would it stay the way I Friendshipleft it?  I got older, and so did everyone else.  We all had obligations and whatnot come into our lives.  But yeah, our attempts to reconnect and to forge some new connections were a complete bust, which bums me out because I am feeling pretty lonely, lately.  It’s no fun to realize that you don’t fit into the lives of people who you used to be close with.  That they up and became different people on you.

I would like more time to chill with people.  I would like people who actually want to hang.  For years, it’s always had to be me who schedules things.  It’s always had to be me who makes the time.  It’s always had to be me who goes out of my way to get things happening.  It’s always had to be me!  It makes it pretty clear that I’m not the first person people want to chill with.  I doubt I’m the second or third, for that matter.  I’m that guy who is fun when they’re around, but not missed when they aren’t.  I’d like to have people to chill with.  One person in-particular.  I keep hoping that we’ve reconnected, but it looks like that was a false hope.  Like most things in my life.

Life to Stop Giving Me the High Hard One

I’m about to graduate college.  Assuming that one of my classes doesn’t continue to fuck with me.  That is a grand assumption, believe me.  Probably the grandest of assumptions.  Lady Luck has been making me her bitch ever since I was 14, following a head injury that killed me for less than a minute.  I don’t know what I did to make it so that she would continually hurt me, but I guess that I was the person she picked.  It had to be somebody, right?

I have a ton of medical problems, and am about to lose my insurance.  I am going to have a degree, one that could open doors for me, but I have no idea what to do with it.  I have a ton of debt that my time in college has given me.  I have no romantic interests.  I have nobody who seems to want me around.  I am a ship adrift, in an ocean that seems to have no stars.  No way to steer my compass.  All I want is for life to just give me a fucking break.  I’d say I earned it, haven’t I?  I’ve done my best to be a good person, not caring especially much the cost.  I’ve been a loyal friend, being there for my people when they needed me.  I was a damn good boyfriend, though that didn’t get me far.  What is it about me that makes it so that life can’t just cut me a fucking break?!  I suppose it might be arrogant.  I know that I’m not the only one.  And believe it or not, I want it to get better for them too.  After all, all we’ve got is each other.  It has given me a unique perspective on living that gives me a sense of camaraderie with my fellow down-trodden.

Sunny and Windy Days, along with Starry Nights

I hate winter.  For real, I fucking hate it.  All I want is for it to go away.  Where is climate change when we need it?  I just want to have a warm and sunny day, with peaceful nights.  Maybe some ocean breeze and the sound of the ocean.  Just something to make the world seem like a less lonely place.  I love the city for its convenience of getting things, but I love the country for its beauty.  It’s a cruel mix of things being difficult and hard to work with.  If only there was some middle ground.  But the real reason that I want that is because I want a place where I can sleep.  I am tired.  I am so fucking tired.  I’m tired of trying.  I’m tired of working hard for no reward.  I’m tired of trying to not be alone, only to end up lonelier than ever.  I’m tired of staring at the same ceiling, when all I want to do is pack my shit in my car and leave, never to return.

Rocky BeachYeah, that sounds nice.  I set down in some new town.  Make a new life, have a new name.  Nobody would know who I am, and I could be a whole new person.  A pity that the cost of living and especially the cost of moving is so damn expensive.  I could get down with that.  A friend told me about this motel that she wanted to buy in California.  It is always busy during the summer, when tourists head up to the redwood forest.  The people who run it are incompetent.  I could do better.  I would be good at running a business.  I could make the place better.  Sure, during the off months I am going to get a lot of couples fucking.  Whatever.  That’s the cost of doing business.  But I could make it better.  Live pretty well, maybe in the motel.  I don’t need much, after all.  Though I shouldn’t deny a potential room.  Less money.

But there is one thing that I want that I can’t find in any store.  It’s something that I can’t find anywhere, try as I might.  I’ll look my whole life.  I doubt I ever will.

To be Happy

#GamerGate: Anita Sarkeesian Threatened and the Media Overload

So, for those who haven’t been paying attention, in a very recent story, Anita Sarkeesian was supposed to be a speaker at a conference at the Utah State University (USU).  However, she never got a chance to speak about her usual BS.  Why?  Well, it seems that there was a threat that she got.  It was a threat from somebody online, threatening mass shooting of Sarkeesian and others there.  In response, Sarkeesian demanded that they have metal detectors for the event.  However, when the school did not deem the threats to be genuine, they denied this request.  So, because Sarkeesian doesn’t have any backbone to defend her values, even in the face of adversity, she cancels her talk.  The media exposure to this has been absolutely nuts and kind of embarrassing.  Because she got almost every major news outlet to print her story.  That’s sure convenient.

The first thing to note is how easily Sarkeesian was dissuaded from talking at this university.  When Marilyn Manson was threatened before a concert that took place after the Columbine shooting, where he was a convenient target to blame, he didn’t care what these bullies thought.  He did his set and didn’t show any sign of fear.  When Bob Marley was doing a concert in support of a political battle he had gotten into, he got shot.  Two days later, he still did his concert as planned.  These two people believed in their music and weren’t about to let some nutjobs stop them from performing.  If Sarkeesian is willing to tuck tail and run from something that nobody has confirmed was a real threat, what does that say about the strength of her beliefs?

What’s more, I have some serious doubts about the validity of this threat.  See, Sarkeesian and her ilk were starting to look REALLY bad lately, following some ugly backlash from the #GamerGate fiasco that still continues.  When they are attacked by another, older and more academically-inclined feminist named Christina Sommers, for their cherry-picking and twisting information to suit their narrative, these people were REALLY starting to look like a bunch of angry teenagers, who were wanting the entire world to change to make them happy.

The timing is very convenient that Sarkeesian gets this threat that shuts her down, just as she is reaching a point where her and every single person who stands with her is looking like a bunch of dicks.  So they get this threat.  One that, according to the campus itself, the police saw as “no risk to students.”  They even determined that the threat she received was no worse than the ones that she usually gets.  Yet she cancels, because they wouldn’t put up metal detectors?  That’s weird.  Wouldn’t they trust the actual law enforcement’s assessment.  This just seems too convenient.

Especially when you see the media’s reaction.  Sarkeesian got all the love in the world, from almost ALL the mainstream media outlets.  NBC, BBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, they all had stories that painted her as the innocent victims of us EVIL, misogynist gamers who hate women.  They accept her narrative at face value.  Even Democracy Now did an article painting her as the victim.  Democracy Now!  The news site that prides itself on doing the research that other sites don’t.  Even they do an article talking about how Sarkeesian is the victim of the awful gamer culture and how we are all bad and she is right.

Which one of them did any research on the terrible videos she has made, or the fact that even a sister-in-arms called her out on her garbage?  Which of these sites decided to talk about how it is so obvious that she has crafted a narrative that fits her description of the events and makes her out to be the hero of a great battle between innocent her and us woman-hating gamers?  None.  They all decided to go with the easy narrative that is not hard to accept.  I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised by this.  After all, aside from BBC and Democracy Now, these are corporate news groups.  Corporate news is, if anything, lazy.

It all just feels too convenient.  It feels like this is part of a narrative.  Sarkeesian was starting to look bad, so she needs something that can make her out to be the hero of the story again.  Something that can put her critics to rest without her having to answer for the charges that people who aren’t just sending her death-threats are saying.  She doesn’t have to address her irrational ignorance.  She just has to answer the soft-ball questions that NBC and whatnot sends her way.  That sure is convenient.  What’s more, the fact that nobody appears to be taking her to task for this is also interesting.  Who has done any research into the validity of this threat?  Someone?  Anyone?

I recently saw a video by a girl who had some rather on-point things to say about women like Sarkeesian –

This is getting WAY out of hand.  I’m with her that feminism in 2014 America makes NO sense at all.  Sarkeesian is being given credibility to her ridiculous notion that women in video games is somehow detrimental to women in real life from mainstream sources, all because of a threat that she got, just when the Internet had written her off.  I’m with Thunderf00t on this one – I would LOVE to see them trace the email that this threat came from.  Here’s me saying that I bet you real money it’s one of her supporters who sent that message, or maybe even the woman herself.  Much like a friend of hers did.  I bet you money.
